I don’t know if I’ve ever fully bought into compression gear before. Sure, I’ve tried some compression socks (which I quite like), and my tights arguably do some squeezing (but they’re mainly for keeping me warm) – but I’ve always been a bit on the fence about what compression could do for me.

And then I tried LEGEND Compression Leg Sleeves!

Initially, I was a bit skeptical of the whole ‘sleeve’ thing. Wouldn’t socks make more sense? Although I admit that getting compression socks on and off can be a bit of a chore. PRO TIP: There’s an awesome video by my friend Corinna (@gusgreeper) on how to put on compression socks…check it out here!

Anyway, back to the sleeves. When they arrived in the mail, I was torn between disappointment and relief that they weren’t a vivid neon colour, but instead just plain black:

But at least they’ll go with everything!

On the Run

I gave the LEGEND Compression Leg Sleeves their first trial during a shorter morning run with the #RunVan crew. Really, it was just a chance for me to show them off, and get used to the feel. Although it was hard for me to assess any particular benefits from them, I quickly forgot that I was wearing them – and if my running gear isn’t drawing attention to itself by bugging me, things are off to a good start (though apparently I have no trouble drawing attention to MYself!)

A few days later, I put the Leg Sleeves to the test on a long run with my Forerunners team. We did just over 15km, and I really felt good afterward. I’ve noticed in recent months that my shins are sore after a longish run. Shin splints? Not entirely sure. I have no idea of the science behind this, but I can definitively say that my shins did NOT hurt after running with the LEGEND Compression Leg Sleeves holding me steady!

What’s Compression all about?

I don’t claim to have a great understanding of compression technology, though I’ve come to learn that, among other things:

  • It prevents muscle fatigue
  • It improves blood circulation
  • It helps prevent DVT (deep vein thrombosis – which just sounds horrifying)
  • It reduces injury

So that’s all good stuff. And what about LEGEND Compression makes it unique? Here’s a wee excerpt from their website:

LEGEND® Compression Leg Sleeves are designed to provide calf support, shin splint relief and decreased fatigue.  LEGEND’s Graduated Compression Technology provides maximum blood flow for muscle performance and endurance. Our popular unisex sleeves stabilize the leg muscles to help prevent calf cramps and shin splints during all sporting activities. Runners and all athletes will benefit from a pair of our LEGENDARY sports compression leg sleeves.  Proudly Made in the USA.

Recovery

This past weekend, the half marathon I was meant to run was cancelled due to snow. However, a group of us gathered and went running anyway! It was too cold for shorts, so I stuck to wearing tights for the long, icy 21.1km.

I came home, and suffered through a horrendous ice bath – OK, I didn’t have enough ice, so I literally just put ice packs in the water.

Afterward, I put on my LEGEND Compression Leg Sleeves. And pretty much left them on for the rest of the day. Because they’re not too tight (their signature hashtag is #RightNotTight), I was comfortable wearing them. And yes, I wore them under my plaid pyjamas.

And you know what? The next day, my legs didn’t ache at all! I’ll admit that the ice bath might have had something to do with it, but I’m also confident that the leg sleeves really made a difference.

Recommendation

Everyone’s bodies are different, and our needs vary. But if you value compression – and if you want something tight but not too tight – LEGEND Compression gear might be just what you’re looking for.
