Modo to the Mountains: Cypress

About a decade has passed since I last went to Cypress Mountain. But with a Monday vacation day and some spectacular weather, what could be better than booking a car and grabbing our snowshoes to Modo to the mountains!

Did you know that 100+ cars in the Modo Car Share fleet have winter tires? That’s one of the requirements for driving Cypress Bowl Road between October and March. Our closest winter-enabled vehicle is the spiffy Tuscon at Lonsdale and 13th – so we bundled onto the bus for quick trip to our chosen SUV and soon we were on our way.

There hasn’t been a lot of fresh snow in the past few weeks, but Cypress has a good base and there are so many trails to choose from!

We started out taking the easy route through Hollyburn Meadow and past the Lodge – to which we’d return later. We continued onto some more challenging trails with a bit more elevation.

At the upper warming hut, we caught a glimpse of Grouse Mountain in the distance. The sun was shining and no warming was required – enjoyed taking photos instead!

Heading downhill presented a few steep slopes, but we managed to descend unscathed. When we finally reached Hollyburn Lodge, we took a coffee break (I had brought some with) and delighted in unexpectedly running into a couple of friends!

All in all, we spent about 2 hours wandering through the forest, enjoying the crisp winter air and sunbeams between the trees. Jumped back into our Modo – gosh, I love how well this car drives! – and went for lunch in Ambleside.

Modo has an awesome new booking feature – have you heard about Open Return? If you’re not sure exactly when you’ll be back, add a mere $3 to your booking and you can return your vehicle anytime during that 24-hour period. Since we had some evening plans, too, we took full advantage of this flexible option!

And what were those evening plans, you may ask? Well, it’s Dine Out Vancouver right now – so off to Deep Cove for a delicious dinner at Deepwater Micro Eatery. YUM! I will be back to this place!!

And with that, we returned out Modo and headed home for a relaxing evening before starting another (slightly shortened!) work week! Perhaps I might dream about the next time we can Modo to the mountains!
